Sanibel and Captiva are best known for shelling, but the passes and flats around these barrier islands are also some of the most productive light-tackle fishing water in Southwest Florida. Redfish, snook, and tarpon all move through the grass flats and mangrove shorelines that ring the islands.

Blind Pass and Redfish Pass are classic spots for snook and tarpon on a moving tide, while the flats along the Sanibel causeway hold redfish and trout. The backcountry around Pine Island Sound, just across from the islands, is prime tarpon water in late spring.

Florida requires a non-resident saltwater fishing license for anyone 16 or older fishing recreationally in salt water, whether from shore, a pier, or a boat.
