Biscayne Bay gives Miami-Dade one of the few places in the country where you can fish clear flats for bonefish and permit within sight of a skyline. The bay's grass flats and mangrove shorelines hold snook, tarpon, and redfish, while Government Cut and the reef line just offshore open up sailfish and kingfish country.

The flats around Key Biscayne and Bear Cut are classic light-tackle water, and the channels near Government Cut fish well for tarpon rolling through in spring. Inland, the Miami River and area canals offer accessible freshwater bass and peacock bass fishing away from the salt.

Florida requires a non-resident saltwater fishing license for anyone 16 or older fishing recreationally in salt water, whether from shore, a pier, or a boat.
